Event Details

In "Angst and Consolation",  the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor explores those eternal opposites and complements -- pain and joy -- and how several composers in different eras have expressed these recurring themes of the human condition.   The Renaissance Magnificat  of Michael Praetorius is contrasted with a very different Magnificat by modern Estonian composer Arvo Part.   Ola Gjeilo, a contemporary rising star among choral composers,  combines celebratory Latin text with themes from Nordic folk songs in his "Prelude".  Works by Grieg, Byrd, Hassler and Victoria, as well as Romanian folk tunes and carols,  round out this a cappella program showcasing a wide range of the choral art.

Returning VAE audience members, be sure to note the new venue and the earlier starting time.

The Vocal Arts Ensemble

Since its founding in 1992, the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor (VAE) has maintained a tradition of excellence in the performance of choral music. Begun as a small chamber group devoted to a cappella singing, VAE now comprises some 28 singers in one of the premier choral ensembles in the region.  VAE has a highly varied repertoire, ranging from Josquin to jazz, and collaborates with local artists such as People Dancing and the Ann Arbor Symphony, with which VAE has repeatedly appeared.  VAE has commissioned several original choral works, including “Lady Liberty” by William Bolcom, premiered in May 2009
